Today in The Sports Lounge Big Lou Welcomes Matt Giteau from the Los Angeles Giltinis!
Matt Giteau is one of the most-decorated Australian rugby players in history, with a career spanning many countries and almost two decades.
The flyhalf has plenty of sporting pedigree in his family. HIs father Ron played professional rugby league, his sister Kristy is a dual code international and wife Bianca is a former top flight netballer. Giteau grew up in Canberra and attended St Edmund’s College, a school that also counts George Gregan among its alumni. It was at St Edmund’s where he first played rugby seriously
Giteau is one of just two players to have made his Wallabies debut before he made his Super Rugby debut. The talented back played his first Test in 2002 against England on that year’s Spring Tour. From there he became a regular fixture on the Test stage when he was fully fit, featuring in the first of three Rugby World Cups less than a year later.
Giteau started his Super Rugby career with the Brumbies, playing 40 matches over the six seasons he was with the team. He made a cross-country move ahead of the 2007 season, signing with new side the Western Force in Perth. He spent three seasons with the Force before returning to the Brumbies in 2010.
It was in 2011 when Giteau faced a career crossroads, left out of the World Cup squad by then Test coach Robbie Deans. With no clarity on his Test future, Giteau signed a deal in France with Toulon and seemingly walked away from any further international opportunities.
GIteau starred in the Top 14 competition with Toulon, winning three consecutive Champions Cup titles with the French glamour club. HIs form in France earned him a recall into the Wallabies fold, a move that required the creation of a new international eligibility clause dubbed the ‘Giteau Law’. After playing a part in the Wallabies’ run to the Rugby World CUp final, Giteau made a brief appearance in the 2016 Bledisloe Cup series before an injury ultimately forced him into international retirement.
After finishing his stint with Toulon, Giteau made the switch to Japan, winning a Top League trophy with Suntory. His time with the Sungoliath finished at the end of the 2020 Japanese season, which was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic. Feeling a bit unfulfilled by the ending in Japan, he’s excited about writing another in Los Angeles.
Giteau had moved back to Canberra with Bianca and their two sons Levi and Kai and also recently welcomed a daughter, Winter.

"Mr. Restaurant," Will Knox Interviews Legendary, Best-Selling Author Ruth Reichl!
Ruth Reichl is the author of My Kitchen Year: 136 Recipes That Saved My Life, a cookbook published in September 2015. She was Editor in Chief of Gourmet Magazine from 1999 to 2009.
Before that she was the restaurant critic of both The New York Times (1993-1999) and the Los Angeles Times (1984-1993), where she was also named food editor. As co-owner of The Swallow Restaurant from 1974 to 1977, she played a part in the culinary revolution that took place in Berkeley, California. In the years that followed, she served as restaurant critic for New West and California magazines.
Ms. Reichl began writing about food in 1972, when she published Mmmmm: A Feastiary. Since then, she has authored the critically acclaimed, best-selling memoirs Tender at the Bone, Comfort Me with Apples, Garlic and Sapphires, and For You Mom, Finally, which have been translated into 18 languages. In 2014 she published her first novel: Delicious!
Ms. Reichl hosted Eating Out Loud, three specials on Food Network, covering New York (2002), San Francisco (2003), and Miami (2003). She is the executive producer of Gourmet’s Diary of a Foodie, public television’s 30-episode series, which debuted in October 2006 and Executive Producer and host of Gourmet’s Adventures with Ruth, a 10-episode public television (2009.) She was also a judge on Top Chef Masters.
Ms. Reichl has been honored with 6 James Beard Awards (one for magazine feature writing and one for multimedia food journalism in 2009; two for restaurant criticism, in 1996 and 1998; one for journalism, in 1994; and Who’s Who of Food and Beverage in America, 1984. In 2007, she was named Adweek’s Editor of the Year. She received the Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism, presented by the Missouri School of Journalism, in October 2007. Ms. Reichl received the 2008 Matrix Award for Magazines from New York Women in Communications, Inc., in April 2008. She holds a B.A. and an M.A. in the History of Art from the University of Michigan and lives in Upstate New York with her husband, Michael Singer, a television news producer.

First up - - - Charlie Abel comes from a big rugby family, one of six boys, all of whom play rugby at some level.
His father, Tony, is a Brumbies stalwart and runs the club’s game day
operations. Charlie was on the fringes of the Waratahs squads in recent seasons.
The front rower showed promise in the Shute Shield for Gordon and stepped up in the National Rugby Championship with Sydney City. Abel made his Super Rugby AU debut for the Rebels against the Reds in 2020, joining brothers Robbie and Jacob in the professional ranks.
Abel was a standout for the Giltinis in their run to the title, playing strongly on both sides of the scrum and for more minutes than any other prop in 2021. He will be oneof the leaders in the front-row in his second season at the club.

Five Directions is an organization dedicated to providing underserved communities in Santa Barbara County with a physical location free of abuse, neglect, and judgement. It strives to be a multi-service organization focused on the needs of children and low-income families, providing structured programs to encourage positive physical and emotional growth.
When COVID hit the country in early 2020, brothers Jairo and Zico Gonzalez noticed the impact that closed schools and social isolation were having on the children in their community. They realized that boxing, as a form of physical discipline and emotional release, could provide a positive outlet during such a challenging time. As public facilities began to re-open, the brothers pooled their money and rented a small industrial space just outside Old Town Goleta. Using their own funds and voluntary donations, the brothers renovated the space, turning it into a full-blown indoor/outdoor community and training center for both youth and adults.
 
Currently, Five Directions provides boxing instruction to any and all members of the community. As a partner with Generation Red Road, it also provides referrals to talking circles, a free resource designed to improve emotional health. As it grows, the organization is looking to expand into additional areas such as strength and conditioning, yoga, meditation, and jujitsu. The ultimate vision is to provide an accessible, comprehensive approach to physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health that will provide members with the tools they need to build a stronger, healthier community.
On the path to the Playoffs - Will they take the Championship 2 years in a row?

The lock/backrower made his Super Rugby debut for the Waratahs in 2007 and was a mainstay of the team for the better part of a decade beyond that.
His form in Super Rugby earned him a Test debut in June 2012, with Dennis featuring against Scotland and going on to play 18 Tests over 18 months.
He most recently played for the Wallabies against Wales in Cardiff in 2013.
Dennis was appointed Waratahs captain in 2013 but poor fortune struck in the 2014 season with the much-loved NSW figure suffering a season-ending knee injury.
That setback meant Dennis had to watch on as the Waratahs collected their first, and only to this point, Super Rugby championship.
After 107 games for the Waratahs, Dennis moved to the UK at the end of the 2016 season.
The forward found success in England, playing for the Chiefs in the Premiership.
Exeter won the competition in his first season with the club and featured heavily in the European and English tournaments during his four seasons with the Premiership powerhouse.
Dennis proved an inspiring signing to captain the Giltinis in their debut season.
He set standards both as a durable, high-performing forward and as a fine leader of men.

He has just developed a new app for musicians, in the
beta-testing stage, ClickRockGo.
Marc Platt has been a well-known fixture of the Los Angeles music scene for nearly four decades.
He began his career in 1983, taking an entry-level position at the newly formed label, Rhino Records. Rhino Entertainment Company is an American specialty record label and production company founded in 1978. It is currently the catalog division for Warner Music Group.
The job gave him an invaluable education in every aspect of the business.
He is a world-renowned advocate for indie musicians trying to break into today’s industry and he's creating more opportunities for emerging artists in Los Angeles and around the world.
The company has a lot of things in development to help further the plight of artists.
